What Is the Difference Between a Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest?

!±8± What Is the Difference Between a Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest?

Although you may have heard the terms cardiac arrest and heart attack used interchangeably, they are two distinct situations with different symptoms and effects. The term heart attack refers to the muscle tissue in the heart being damaged by lack of blood flow. When a person experiences a heart attack, it is usually due to a blood clot in one of their heart's major arteries which drastically limits or stops the blood flow to the heart. Once the flow of blood is cut off from the muscle tissue in the heart, it will begin to die and cause severe chest pains.

Symptoms of Heart Attack:
Chest Pain Pressure, heaviness or tightness in the chest Pain or pressure in the neck or jaw Shortness of Breath Sweating Pain or throbbing at or in-between the shoulder blades

The condition cardiac arrest refers to when the heart actually fails to pump blood to the bodies vital organs. In the case of cardiac arrest, the heart will either stop pumping blood adroitly, or vary in speed which would render it useless. A person experiencing cardiac arrest can die within four minutes if not immediately receiving efficient medical attention. There are three main causes for sudden cardiac arrest are ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and asystole.

Ventricular Fibrillation

Ventricular fibrillation occurs when the heart muscle begins to quiver erratically, leading to a loss of blood flow through the heart.

Treatments for ventricular fibrillation include CPR and defibrillation

Ventricular Tachycardia

Ventricular tachycardia is a problem in which a recurring loop in the conduction pathways of the heart gives way to rapid contractions of the ventricles.

As a result, the victims blood pressure and overall blood flow will be greatly reduced due to the inability of the ventricles to fully fill with blood between contractions

Asystole

Asystole is the absolute standstill of the heart muscle

It is very important to recognize the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest. In the instance of a heart attack, immediately seek medical attention by calling 9-1-1 or getting to your local ER center. In a cardiac arrest situation, immediate action has to be taken to save the person's life in the form of an automatic external defibrillator (AED). The AED unit is a small, portable, and civilian friendly (easy to use) defibrillator that can be used in order to jump start a persons heart long enough for medical attention to arrive.

Saving Lives One Defibrillator At A Time

!±8± Saving Lives One Defibrillator At A Time

An Automated External Defibrillator, otherwise known as an AED is a valuable piece of emergency medical equipment to keep in your office environment. Due to many factors including congested traffic, building security, remote locations and other unforeseen circumstances, first responders might not be able arrive in time to save a person in cardiac arrest, especially since the average response time in the nation is 10 to 12 minutes. If an AED is on hand, a victim's chances will significantly increase from the help provided until Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) can arrive. AEDs are easy to use and require minimal training. The designers realize that the average user is not going to be a medical technician but rather someone who is under extreme pressure during a tense situation to save a life. Different models include features such as one-button operation, interchangeable electrodes and continuous monitoring capability.

Training requirements vary depending on your state's requirements but this usually includes a brief AED course and CPR training. Organizations like the American Heart Association offer training courses for AED utilization. Implementing an AED program is not only beneficial to company morale but it can also help in decreasing liability. Due to the ease of operation, these units are difficult to misuse and laws signed in 2000 by President Clinton provide AED users and companies with protection against liability. Currently there is legislation pending that would actually make this equipment the standard of care for those who experience sudden cardiac arrest. When that happens, companies will actually be at a greater risk if they do not have these life-saving defibrillators available on site. The cost of an AED is minimal compared to the cost of litigation. Units cost approximately the same as a high-end laptop. They also offer warranties and batteries with extended life.

There are several points to consider when implementing an AED program. First, compare and contrast the features and prices of various models. What are the needs of your company? How many people are employed in the location? If you have a large corporate workplace, you might be able to arrange a discount with a salesperson for multiple devices. Check with your state's training requirements, which could include the need for physician supervision or frequent quality assurance programs. Placement of the units is essential. AEDs allow for both stationary and mobile placement throughout the workplace. The American Heart Association recommends that they be placed to support a 3 to 5 minute response time. Locations could include reception areas, manufacturing areas, near a fire extinguisher, in a security office or even on board the company jet. These units should always be placed in an easily accessible and visible area for maximum efficiency.

AED Defibrillators - Understand how automated external defibrillators (AEDs) work

!±8± AED Defibrillators - Understand how automated external defibrillators (AEDs) work

The beat of the human heart is powered by chemical stimuli by specialized cells, called pacemaker cells produce electricity. Change chemical impulses, increase or decrease heart rate, medications, stress and physical activity, only a couple of things that change the chemistry of the body - These cells are often influenced by external stimuli. One of the most popular charms defibrillation and external cardiac often misunderstood.

Defibrillation is the administration of an electric shock to the heart, depolarize the heart muscle and allows the heart's natural pacemaker potential to set back and continue beating. Defibrillation is called by defibrillator equipment run differ in design and functionality. Currently, the well-known trope of TV and film coating on the plate of the defibrillator patient is obsolete. Defibrillation is more common than prophalayctic nodes that are attached to the patient's chest and used to happen, the heart rate monitor. These nodes provideShock if a shockable heart rhythm occurs. Unlike television programs, a patient with non-shattering, it is usually only a small amount of muscle contraction throughout the body. Also in contrast to media representations, is a flat line is usually a "'rhythm Unshockable. Fibrillation is a" "shockable heart rhythm and, if the ventricles quiver instead of working in a model. Ventricular tachycardia, another Rythmn treatable is extremely fast rate at which it is certainly a loss of momentum.Be the types of heart rhythm disturbances can not shockable rhythm, depending on the severity and type. Defibrillator devices in hospitals are not usually fully automatic, but they are very similar to fully automatic AEDs from Cardiac Science, the costumes, and Phillips HeartStart Samaritan.

The Powerheart Cardiac Science AED G3 laptop is designed so that they use to easily in an emergency cardiac arrest. The Powerheart Automated External Defibrillator Portable has a screen of text, noisy and chaotic virtually in tandem with voice instructions. The instrument displays the patient's heart rate, the waveform, the number of shocks delivered, elapsed time. The Powerheart defibrillator is equipped with automatic synchronization and detection of pacemaker pulses.

The ZOLL AED Plus is a unique device that is fully automatic, but it is the only full-rescue AED, to walk you through "Chain of Survival" all with the support of CPR.Not only that, the Zoll AED Plus Track a shockable heartbeat, but also traces of chest compressions by rescuers and provides advice on the pace and pressure resistance. The ZOLL AED Plus provides Real CPR help, provides visual and audible feedback and instructions. The HeartStart AED also provides audible commands when in use, and the rescuer defibrillation can go through, if a shockable Rythmn is detected. The Samaritan PAD Public Access Defibrillator AED is specifically designed toUse of public access. All of these AEDs verbal and visual cues to guide the rescuer. Antiepileptic drugs may affect the rescuer know when and when not to touch the patient. If the shock is necessary, it will be a visual signal.
